Packing earth into tires is labor-intensive indeed. And tires, (while admittedly cheap, you can even get paid to take people's unwanted old tires,) are not the most pleasant material to look at or smell on a daily basis. So, once built they're usually plastered over. I like the idea of diverting a waste stream, though. And the other elements of earthship design, (passive solar, earth berming, integrated food production, graywater, etc.) are solid af.
